[ It's not terribly late when Rune shows up at Ciro's house, the sun beginning to sink below the horizon. They'd made plans for this over a month ago, and he does his best to be polite to Ciro's parents before slipping away to the other boy's room without a sound. He knocks on the door once and lets himself in, not bothering to wait for an answer. If he's doing something important, it'll have to wait.
They apparently need to get a few things together before heading out to the field.
When he spots Ciro, Rune helps himself to a seat on the corner of his bed and fiddles with the edge of the blanket as he looks at him. It might seem strange, but he's rather excited about this, their first real attempt at a ritual without any supervision. He knows it'll go well. Yet, convincing Ciro to trust him had been a little difficult for some reason. Leaning back, he stares at him. ]
Are you ready? I thought you were going to meet me out by the old barn.
[Ciro felt Rune coming early enough that he could have told his parents to not open the door and turn off all the lights if he wouldn't have had to explain why to them. So instead of doing anything he just covers himself in his covers and pretends to be asleep. It's a lame plan, but it's all he can manage so suddenly.
Sure, they planned it, but Ciro didn't think Rune would really REALLY want to go through with it. His parents loved him because so far he was the only one able to get Ciro out of his shell, and the only friend he really had.]
Maybe we shouldn't?
[He's dressed underneath the blanket like he really tried to go to meet him, but was overcome by cold feet.]
What do you think's going to happen? We've done this plenty of times before.
[ Sort of. The spell is easy enough, and they've cast circles so often with their parents and other witches that it doesn't seem complicated. Rune's been thinking about it nonstop since they'd agreed, but finding Ciro under his blankets without any urge to get up and leave is sort of disheartening. He's stubborn though, stretching out onto the bed and half-draping himself over Ciro so he can look at him. ]
If it doesn't feel right, we stop. It's not that hard. [ He reaches out to pull at his hair, brushing some of it away from his face. ] You'll have to get used to it sooner or later. I'll be there with you.
[ As if that's the only real reason worth going. ]
[Plenty of times with grown ups! Older witches that knew what they were doing. He frowns, hoping Rune will just let it go and settle for hanging out together instead, but then he feels a weight on top of him and his friend is looking him right in the eyes.
How is he supposed to say no to him?]
Alright, okay. I'll do it. [He sighs, nodding his head. Rune knows exactly how to get to him. He's the smartest person he knows that's around his age, so Ciro knows that he'll be in good hands.]
[ He could easily push him off and tell him to stop. Then again, Rune knows Ciro almost as well as he knows his own magic and his own limits, and it's easy to convince him if he just begs a little or gives him a smile. That comes as soon as he agrees, ducking his head to press his face against him in quiet thanks before rolling off and sitting up again. It shouldn't take them long to get there, which means they should arrive just after dark to the spot he'd picked out. ]
I'll wait for you by the door. It's going to be fun.
[ Is that even possible?
He isn't sure, but he gives Ciro's blanket a quick tug before disappearing to talk to Ciro's parents about going out for a while. They'd be back before it got too late, of course. They wouldn't get into any trouble either. He's thanking Ciro's mother when Rune sees him, immediately grabbing his hand to drag him outside. ]
[Fun, he says. All Ciro can think about are the worst case scenarios. Or what he saw the other day when he was scrying. In the hottest part of the fire he was shown images of he and Rune together, doing something they've never done before--kissing.
Thinking about it makes his face heat up as he gets out of bed. He's glad Rune isn't there to see the way he has to rub and pat at his face to calm himself down.
Since he's schmoozed his parents already, Ciro has very little explaining to do when he heads out.]
[ As if he doesn't know where to go, guiding him down the street and turning until they're heading into a field of one of the nearby neighbors. It's the area they always go when there's a holiday or something important to commemorate, but this time, Rune leads them out further past the altar and the trampled path to a different area. It's just at the edge of the woods, and to show off a little, Rune casts a spell that dots the line of trees with wisps of dark flame that glow brighter in the setting sun. He only lets go of Ciro's hand when they reach a spot where he'd set a bag full of things to use. ]
I was asking around about it. [ He means rituals in general. ] Most of the older witches said it's easier if we're naked.
[ He isn't sure why that has to be a thing, but he thinks it's something Ciro should know. ]
[Ciro looks down where Rune's fingers on his own, heat rushing to his face, but he holds onto that hand as his friend leads the way.
Once they pass by the more familiar part of the field, the gravity of what they're about to do hits him and he feels himself starting to get cold feet. He wants to suggest that they turn around and go back home, there's too much that can go wrong, and he already doesn't have good control of his magic--not like Rune. Rune was perfect, and it was actually unfair.]
When did you learn that one?
[Is what comes out. So much for voicing his apprehension. Ciro takes a deep breath, shoving his hands into his pockets when Rune lets the one go.]
N-naked? [Oh boy. He can't really think about being naked in front of Rune right now. It's not that he's shy about his body, but he's also never let anyone else see it before. What if there's something wrong with it? He hasn't seen Rune's either, but he's sure it's as perfect as the rest of him--still unfair.]
What? [ He looks up from where he's crouched over the bag, pulling out a few of the bottles tucked inside. ] Oh. I read about it and decided to try it tonight.
[ Which means, yes, it's his first attempt, but there's nothing that Rune can't do if he puts his mind to it. It's how he's always been, not thinking anything of it as he sets a book on the tree stump he's decided to use as a makeshift altar. When he's done, Rune regards Ciro quietly, unsure how to settle his insecurities. What was wrong with being naked? It's not as if they hadn't grown up together or seen each other shirtless before. He doesn't think it'd be much different than that. ]
Yes, naked. But we don't have to if you're uncomfortable. [ He pauses. ] I can do it.
[ Because being naked while Ciro is still dressed is completely normal. ]
[Ciro shakes his head when Rune looks up, not meaning to make such a big deal about it. He crouches near the base of a tree, pretending to be fascinated by a pretty plain looking mushroom.]
If you'll do it, I'll do it. [He says eventually, touching the mushroom lightly, giving it a bit of help to grow just a bit larger before he gets to his feet. It's still making him nervous, but deep (very deep) inside, he's a little bit interested to see what Rune looks like naked. Does that make him a pervert?]
It would be weird if only you were naked.
[Ciro continues to face the tree as he pulls off his shirt, dropping it nearby in the grass. He kicks off his shoes next so he can stand barefoot on the protruding roots of the same tree. Following a quick glance over his shoulder to Rune who he assumes is still setting up, he comes out of his pants and underwear to stand completely undressed. It's a little exhilarating, and his shyness fades when Rune doesn't show much sexual interest. At least none he can detect in changes of the other witch's emotions.]
